The picture that I’m holding represents the greatest health threat of the century. Dirty industries are generating air pollution that is feeding climate change, a reality that has great bearing on personal and planetary wellbeing. Who doesn’t want a healthy future? It’s time for us to unite behind this bipartisan goal and move forward with solutions that stabilize the climate and the future of life on this planet.

Clean Air Ambassador | Baltimore, Maryland

Cindy Parker

Climate change is this century’s greatest threat to public health. As a public health physician, trained in environmental health, this greatly concerns me. Some air pollutants are also greenhouse gases, threatening public health and changing our climate. Climate change will make the concentrations of many air pollutants worse; most air pollutants will make climate change worse and have immediate health effects. A major solution to both problems is to reduce air pollution, immediately improving the health of everyone, preventing disease and death, and stabilizing our warming climate.

The concern for public health—our own, our children’s and our loved ones—is one of the few values that reaches across the political spectrum. Strategies to improve health can appeal to all.

I want to find those shared health values and communicate them to everyone in a meaningful way that motivates them to take action.

Clean air should be a fundamental right. Air pollution causes asthma attacks, lung disease, and even death. But our bodies don't have to be the dumping ground for dirty industries.

The technology to dramatically reduce harmful air pollution is available today, and major polluters should be required to use it.

Clean Air Ambassadors from every state are sending a powerful message: Everyone has a right to breathe clean, healthy air.

It’s time Congress and the EPA used their ears to help our lungs.
