My family has lived in Maryland since the 1700's. We have a strong sense of place for Prince George's County and the surrounding area.

Coal emissions and air deposition have contributed to a decline in air quality and contributed to respiratory problems among communities in the region. My home county absorbs a disproportionate share of environmental and toxic health issues. We are deeply concerned about environmental justice and fairness.

I was born and raised along the Patuxent River. Prior to founding Patuxent Riverkeeper in 2004, I operated a business that provided professional media and mass communication services internationally. I also worked as volunteer activist on the Patuxent for over 20 years until the momentum of the volunteer environmental work overcame my media career and the challenge of Riverkeeping beckoned.

I also serve on the Board of the Environmental Integrity Project, as a Governor-appointed Commissioner on the State's Patuxent River Commission and on the Board of Waterkeeper Alliance, the international group that licenses Waterkeepers.

I am an adjunct instructor at historic St. Mary's College of Maryland, where I teach an upper level course in Environmental Law and Policy. I am an avid kayaker and backpacker, and also help to maintain trails on the Appalachian Trail.
