Earthjustice is seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) to join our Information Technology team. This position is responsible for implementation, security, maintenance, administration, and overall health of the organization’s database environment.  The position regularly works on cross-functional project teams.  The DBA will be charged with maintaining and optimizing highly critical Microsoft SQL databases which drive our overall organizational success.


  • Work with key stakeholders in the selection of database application systems.
  • Build strong relationships and serve as a business partner to program and administrative teams with database application selection and support.
  • Manage the deployment, testing and development of database systems long-term maintenance and support program.
  • In conjunction with systems administrator, design and build new SQL servers in a highly available and scalable manner.
  • Perform routine and customary operational and monitoring activities to ensure the database environment(s) are stable and capable of meeting ongoing business needs.
  • Perform database administration tasks including but not limited to software evaluation and installation, database design and implementation, maintenance, security administration, capacity planning, performance tuning, etc.
  • Write SQL statements, stored procedures, and functions as needed for application administrators.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of best practice database IT strategies that meet current and future business needs.
  • Ensure that databases meet reliability performance standards.
  • Develop policies and procedures and document the Earthjustice database environments.
  • Perform database backups and regular recovery tests.
  • Troubleshoot SQL Server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends.
  • Advise report developers on the most efficient database query designs.
  • Ensure that databases meet reliability performance standards.
  • Working in conjunction with vendors design test and deploy database change scripts as required.
  • Provide stakeholders with technical support and training as required.
  • Keep abreast of industry developments and evaluate for organizational effectiveness.


  • Minimum of three years’ experience as a Microsoft SQL Server administrator.
  • Computer Science degree preferred or equivalent educational/professional experience.
  • MCSA: SQL Server certification, or comparable, highly preferred.
  • Microsoft or other technical certifications desirable.
  • Experience working within an enterprise database environment.
  • Advance knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and management tools including Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.
  • Excellent knowledge of data backup, recovery, security, data integrity and SQL.
  • SQL Server replication experience desired.
  • Ability to create account and performance reports for application administrators.
  • Experience with a constituent relationship management (CRM) system highly preferred.
  • Experience with document management systems highly preferred (ProLaw preferred).
  • Experience working with financial database systems.
  • Familiarity with Citrix XenAPP, Microsoft Hyper-V, and SAN environments desirable.
  • Experience with failover clustering, SAN replication, and other high availability technologies desirable.
  • Excellent customer service and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Flexibility to work as part of a team, but also independently with minimal supervision as required.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Some weekend and off hour work may be required.
  • Occasional travel to regional offices may be required.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
