Healthy Communities Project Attorney

* This position will ideally be housed in our Seattle or Washington, DC office. However, for the right candidate, we will consider housing the position remotely or in one of our other regional offices.

The Project Attorney will join Earthjustice’s Healthy Communities Program and work closely with our Vice President of Litigation for Healthy Communities, Managing Attorneys, and other program staff to continue our very successful litigation in this area and to help develop this area of work.  This two-year position will be based in our Washington, DC or Seattle, WA office.  This program is at the heart of Earthjustice’s mission to defend the right of all people to a healthy environment and encompasses Earthjustice’s work on clean air, clean water, toxic chemicals and wastes, and related domestic and international issues.  The attorney selected for this position will focus on our growing clean water practice area, but also will assist on litigation and other advocacy in our efforts to protect the environment and health in the nation’s most overburdened communities. Responsibilities

Working with more senior Earthjustice attorneys, the Project Attorney will perform a variety of litigation-related tasks that may include:

  • Conducting factual investigations and legal research, and preparing memoranda on issues relating to ongoing or potential new cases.
  • Drafting motions, briefs and other pleadings.
  • Participating in proceedings before state and federal courts, public utility commissions, and other administrative tribunals.
  • Assisting with discovery.
  • Interacting with clients and working with experts to develop a clear understanding of the facts involved in each case and to ultimately support our litigation goals.

Qualifications

  • Law school graduates who are admitted, or willing to apply for admission, to the state bar of where they are located.
  • 3+ years of litigation experience.
  • Excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • An excellent academic record, good judgment, and a strong work ethic. 
  • Commitment to serving the public interest.
  • Initiative, creative thinking, and the ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • Contributes to the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.
