Earthjustice’s Washington DC office and Clean Energy Program are seeking full-time Litigation Assistants to provide substantive and administrative support our team of lawyers who are working to preserve our natural heritage, safeguard our health, and promote a clean energy future.
The Litigation Assistants will provide administrative and litigation support to DC Regional Office and Clean Energy Program attorneys practicing in courts, public service commissions, and various administrative forums. Tasks may include, but are not limited, to the following:
- Reviewing, editing and preparing documents for filing, including: proofreading, cite checking, bluebooking, formatting, producing tables of contents and authorities, assembling exhibit lists and exhibits, etc.;
- Filing and serving paper and electronic filings;
- Ensuring compliance with the court and agency rules;
- Creating, organizing, and maintaining case files and contacts;
- Computing and calendaring court deadlines;
- Assisting in the collection, preparation and review of discovery;
- Assisting attorneys with deposition and hearing preparation, including: organizing document binders, printing exhibits, creating exhibit lists, communicating with court reporters, etc.;
- Supporting attorneys in gaining admission to courts, registration renewals, and creating and managing e-filing accounts;
- Case development, including web and library factual and technical research and analysis;
- Tracking relevant dockets and issues via the Federal Register, agency web sites, various distribution lists, media outlets, etc.
- Creation of PowerPoint presentations for public education, Board meetings, and fundraising efforts; and
- Providing general administrative support (photocopying, proofreading, taking meeting minutes, updating database of case descriptions, communications with agencies and courts).
- Bachelor’s degree and at least 1-year of office experience or comparable experience.
- Paralegal training or background in environmental or energy policy or advocacy is a plus.
- A can-do attitude, meticulous attention to detail, and an unrelenting commitment to high performance standards.
- Excellent research, analytical, writing, and computer skills (word processing, databases and spreadsheets, Internet, etc.).
- Experience with discovery management programs or GIS is a plus.
- Ability to organize, set priorities among multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and function calmly under pressure.
- Ability to work effectively with remote staff and to maintain confidential information.
- Flexible, punctual, highly reliable, and available for occasional work outside of office hours.
- A team player who will enthusiastically take on tasks that range from intellectually challenging to more mundane administrative work.
- Initiative, good judgment, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and ability to work well in a collegial setting.
- Commitment to serving the public interest, and a passion for the role of Earthjustice and its mission.
- Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
