Earthjustice is hiring a staff scientist to join our team of public interest advocates working to protect America’s wildlife from the range of threats facing them, including fossil fuel development, mining, logging, and other threats. The position will be based in Earthjustice’s offices in either Bozeman, Montana, or Denver, Colorado. The staff scientist will work closely with Earthjustice’s team of attorneys and other professionals in our work to protect and recover imperiled wildlife species across the nation. The scientist’s responsibilities will include analyzing the impacts of proposed development activities and regulatory actions; reviewing and commenting on proposed agency actions and environmental analyses; identifying, recruiting, and working with expert witnesses; and serving as a public spokesperson for Earthjustice and our clients on wildlife issues. The successful applicant for this position will combine excellent technical skills with excellent advocacy skills, along with a passion for protecting America’s most valuable and imperiled natural resources.

- Conduct analysis and research on issues relevant to Earthjustice’s wildlife advocacy, such as impacts of proposed development activities and regulatory actions on wildlife, management needs of specific wildlife species, threats to specific wildlife species, and similar issues.
- Review proposed agency actions and draft environmental analyses and prepare analyses and comments on them.
- Identify, recruit, and work with individuals and organizations possessing scientific and technical expertise relevant to Earthjustice’s wildlife advocacy, including expert witnesses.
- Serve as spokesperson and advocate for Earthjustice and our clients on wildlife issues, which could include speaking with audiences such as public officials, scientists, clients, the media, and Earthjustice supporters and preparing written content for the same audiences.
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Master’s) in relevant scientific discipline such as biology.
- Experience in analyzing and assessing wildlife impacts and/or management needs.
- Strong advocacy skills, including the desire to persuade as well as to analyze and the ability to convey scientific and technical concepts in terms understandable and persuasive to laypeople.
- Ability to write and speak clearly and compellingly.
- Initiative, good judgment, strong work ethic, and a sense of humor.
- Ability to work well independently and in collaboration with others.
- Facility and inclination in recruiting other scientists to work collaboratively with Earthjustice and our clients on issues within those scientists’ areas of expertise.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work effectively to meet deadlines.
- Capacity to communicate and work effectively with external audiences such as the news media, government officials, and coalition partners and to function as an effective spokesperson for Earthjustice and its clients.
- Ability and willingness to travel as needed for case work, court appearances and presentations, especially as the issues on which the scientist works will not be limited to the Rocky Mountain region where he or she will reside.
