In addition to a talented cadre of environmental lawyers, legislative advocates, development, and other staff, Earthjustice has an amazing communications department that works in strategic partnership with every department at the organization. 

The Senior Press Secretary leads the general media team, which includes a press secretary, a media associate, and a half-dozen contractors who oversee media on a part-time basis for Earthjustice’s regional offices. The general media team is part of Earthjustice’s communications department, which also includes a National Press Secretary, who oversees all Administration and Capitol Hill media relations and communications managers who are devoted to shaping public discourse on a range of topics, including climate change, clean energy, public lands, wildlife, oceans, air, water, and pesticides. 

While many people in the communications department work on media, the Senior Press Secretary is the lead media strategist for the organization as a whole and for high-profile cases that cut across multiple areas of litigation and advocacy, like the Dakota Access Pipeline. She/he works with all members of the communications department, legal team members, and other organizational leaders to determine which cases to maximize through the media, and designs media plans and strategies to help shape public discourse, gain broad support, and elevate Earthjustice’s profile.

The Senior Press Secretary reports to the Senior Director of Advocacy Communications and can be based either in San Francisco, or Washington D.C. (preference for D.C.).

Responsibilities

  • Works with managing attorneys, litigators, program staff, and communications department leaders to identify media opportunities for Earthjustice, clients, and coalition partners.
  • Develops strategic media plans to elevate issues, including drafting messaging and media training staff, clients, partners, and third-party validators on issues prior to plan rollout and individual placement.
  • Coordinates Earthjustice media opportunities—specifically litigation and the work of the regional contractors—by prioritizing opportunities, maintaining a process for collaboration, and helping to coordinate other parts of Earthjustice’s communication teams to amplify messaging.  
  • Acts as one of the main liaisons and advisors between the communications department and Earthjustice staff to identify opportunities for enterprise-level, in-depth coverage of Earthjustice issues that cut across and touch on many of Earthjustice’s priority issues.
  • Leads effort to keep staff at all level, especially the Board and Senior Leadership Team, informed and educated about Earthjustice’s profile on a wide range of media platforms, which includes overseeing production of daily, monthly, and annual media reports.
  • Builds relationships with regional and top-tier journalists and influencers who may write about Earthjustice issues.
  • Maintaining a database of national, regional and web press and develops press lists for organizational use.
  • Develops, manages and executes rapid response media outreach, including, story, editorial, and OpEd placements on key issues.
  • Actively pitches reporters, writers, and producers at national and regional newspapers, magazines, TV and radio shows and stations, and online media outlets.
  • Provides media with regular updates on Earthjustice activities, as appropriate.
  • Pitches enterprise, feature-length stories related to Earthjustice’s work.
  • Pitches Earthjustice leaders to TV and radio shows.
  • Writes materials for Earthjustice website.
  • Writes or reviews OpEds, editorial board memos, press releases, blogs, and other materials as needed.
  • Represents Earthjustice in coalitions and partnership-developing activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Manages press secretary and a media associate to strategize and provide earned media coverage for key issues.
  • Oversees a national team of media professionals who support Earthjustice’s regional offices
  • Additional media contractors for high-priority issues as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or Marketing preferred.
  • Ten years of experience in media relations—either for a firm or in-house—with an emphasis on social justice issues preferred.
  • At least five years with progressive supervisory experience.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience pitching media.
  • Relationships with media and journalists.
  • Social media experience and skills, especially Twitter.
  • Knowledge and ability using multimedia communications tools.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • Contributes to recruiting, hiring, developing and retaining a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • The ideal candidate will have: environmental communications experience, experience with breaking news and crisis communications, experience with mainstream and alternative news outlets, and exemplary organizational and decision-making skills.
