    • Earthjustice California Wins Award
The California office of Earthjustice has been honored for its work in protecting the Delta Smelt, a tiny fish endemic to the mixed fresh and salt waters of the upper San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, which is considered an indicator of the habitat's ecological well-being. The honor was bestowed by Environment Now, an activist nonprofit foundation based in Southern California, and publicized in its recently released "Top Achievements of the Environmental Community in Southern California - 2007" report.

In 2005, Earthjustice and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) represented a coalition of nonprofit environmental groups in a successful suit against the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, challenging the agency's biological opinion which concluded that continued and expanded water export operations would not jeopardize the threatened smelt or its habitat. The May 2007 U.S. District Court ruling, in favor of the smelt and the coalition, ordered a new biological opinion and mandated significant interim protective measures which could help save not only the smelt, but Chinook salmon, steelhead trout, green sturgeon and the entire Delta ecosystem.

Protecting the "Heart of California" from Urban Development
The primary zone of the California Delta is truly the heart of the state. This western watershed for the Sierra Nevada mountains is home to a multitude of wildlife and family farms, it also provides drinking water to millions of Californians. A recent proposal to allow 162 units of housing within this zone at Clarksburg was successfully challenged by Earthjustice and a coalition of local residents.
