Frack Target: Lewis Shale/Barnett Shale
As gas companies try to stake a claim in the Lewis Shale, they’re facing off against residents in towns like Aztec, who aren’t too happy about their new corporate neighbors. Energy giant BP has been drilling wells as close as 150 yards to people’s homes and has been buying up mineral rights all around the region. But in other parts of the state – like Santa Fe County and the Valle Vidal - residents have fought back and chalked up historic victories against oil and gas company abuses.
Below is a map of some of the high profile incidents ("fraccidents") related to the country's gas drilling boom that have already occurred in and around New Mexico. Click on any fraccident to learn more.
