Establishing the Human Right to a Healthy Environment

Earthjustice uses US courts and international tribunals to hold corporations and governments accountable for human rights violations resulting from environmental devastation. We also work closely with the United Nations to establish universal recognition of the right to a healthy environment and to defend victims of environmental destruction.

Earthjustice's International program played a key role in convincing a United Nations expert to find that, under international law, "[a]ll persons have the right to a secure, healthy and ecologically sound environment." We have built on this important statement by providing detailed briefs in support of local communities seeking to hold US corporations responsible for destructive oil and mining activities.
