Protecting Public Health along the Anacostia River

Attorneys in Earthjustice's Washington, DC, office protected the Anacostia River from contamination from a former naval factory and helped block harmful development projects along the river.

The Anacostia River, flowing from Maryland through Washington, D.C, is one of the nation's most polluted waterways. An Earthjustice suit led the US Navy to agree to clean up the Washington Navy Yard, a chemical-laden former naval factory located on the banks of the Anacostia.

Attorneys in Earthjustice's Washington, DC, office also helped block a proposal to build a theme park on Children's Island in the Anacostia River and a new segment of freeway along the banks of the river. Both projects would have destroyed parkland and caused noise, traffic, and air pollution in predominantly poor neighborhoods and communities of color.
