Progress Energy to shut down coal power plant in Goldsboro

  Summary:  Progress Energy will begin a massive series of its coal plant shut downs in North Carolina in response to the expected federal caps on greenhouse gases and stricter limits on pollution. There is serious concern about contamination of waterways associated with toxic coal ash impoundments from the plants due to weak state regulations.

"It's going to be a heavy burden on the states to make sure these are closed properly," said Lisa Evans, a lawyer with Earthjustice.
