Summary:  The Federal government is ending existing protections for Wyoming wolves and giving the green light to killings of the wolves on sight. With the exception of the Yellowstone National Park, where the wolves will remain safe for now, the recovering population outside of Yellowstone has been delisted from the endangered species list and will be subject to the state’s management plan, which classifies the remaining 90 percent of wolves as “predators” and justifies their killing anytime by anyone.

"Wyoming's open season on wolves in almost all of the state would allow aerial gunning of wolves and even killing wolf pups in their den," said Earthjustice attorney Jenny Harbine. "Wyoming law also allows unrestricted killing of wolves if they are found to be 'harassing' livestock or domestic animals, even if wolves are intentionally baited into the conflict," added Harbine. "These policies could drive wolves back into local extinction."

  Summary:  The Arctic Ocean ice cover retreat this year has hit an all-time low since the previous record retreat in the summer of 2007, reaching an alarming 4.1-million square kilometers. Research shows that this retreat is still in progress, “with two to three more weeks left in the melt season.” The accelerating ice loss is becoming the new norm, severely affecting not only the Arctic life, but the lives of people around the world.

“The rapid loss of sea ice is a powerful indicator of the accelerated warming occurring throughout the Arctic,” said attorney Erika Rosenthal of Washington, D.C.-based Earthjustice. “This warming is causing the swift increase in the melting of glaciers and the Greenland Ice Sheet that led scientists to project a sea level rise of between 0.9 and 1.6 metres by the end of the century. For low-lying communities from the Pacific Islands to Bangladesh, and much of the U.S. Atlantic coast, this would be calamitous.”

  Summary:  A recent New York study shows that chlorpyrifos—a harmful pesticide produced by Dow and widely used in industrial farming—is more detrimental to the mental health of boys than that of girls. This is the first study of its kind that provides compelling evidence that there is a strong link between prenatal exposure to insecticides and neurological developmental issues, specifically IQ levels detriment in boys.

Earthjustice filed a lawsuit against EPA in an effort to ban the hazardous pesticide from farming and all of its other remaining uses. Kristen Boyles, an Earthjustice attorney said, “The exposures are to farmworkers and farmworker families, and people who live in those rural areas that are abutting the fields where chlorpyrifos is applied.”

  Summary:  Hawaiian Natives and environmental groups are celebrating a court ruling which orders the Commission on Water Resource Management to consider restoring water to several central Maui streams. Restoring the streams will support native plants and animals and enable the Native Hawaiian people to grown taro, a traditional element of the Hawaiian diet.

The ruling is a “historic and tremendous victory,” said Isaac Moriwake, an Earthjustice attorney representing the groups Hui o Nā Wai ʻEhā and the Maui Tomorrow Foundation. He said his clients “feel vindicated after years of frustration. Some of them couldn't even talk because they were choked up. These were tears of joy but also tears of relief, in a sense.”
