In Silent Spring, Rachel Carson wrote, "Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature." This photograph, of an emerging fern, is a reminder of the strength that lies within each of us through our connection to the natural world. As we inhale, we breathe the same air as one another and this fern.
Clean Air Ambassador | Newark, Delaware
Clean air is vital to healthy communities. But too many communities in my state are not as healthy as they once were.
In Delaware, we have increasing numbers of cancer clusters due to poorly regulated coal ash disposal sites. This is unacceptable. As someone who works in environmental and energy policy, I know that the only way to end this deadly pollution is by strengthening environmental standards, enforcing existing regulations, and removing loopholes that prohibit regulatory oversight.
Rivers are my inspiration, but air is my lifeblood—and that of every human being on earth. This is why it is a tremendous honor to represent my fellow citizens and share with my elected officials the Delaware experience and fight for clean air.
But it’s not just one state’s fight or experience that I’ll be relaying—it’s the experience of all who everyday deal with the effects of polluted air across the country and in the world.
I can only hope that when I do speak, they will have the courage to listen.

50 States United For Healthy Air
Clean air should be a fundamental right. Air pollution causes asthma attacks, lung disease, and even death. But our bodies don't have to be the dumping ground for dirty industries.
The technology to dramatically reduce harmful air pollution is available today, and major polluters should be required to use it.
Clean Air Ambassadors from every state are sending a powerful message: Everyone has a right to breathe clean, healthy air.
It’s time Congress and the EPA used their ears to help our lungs.
