Earthjustice seeks a highly skilled strategist, manager, and fundraiser to serve as Director of Digital Fundraising and Engagement. The Director serves as a key member of the Development Departmental leadership team to support a collaborative, holistic and cohesive fundraising environment, working directly with colleagues on joint strategies from major gifts to donor marketing.
Digital fundraising currently provides nearly 10% of the organization’s annual $100M+ revenue. Earthjustice has launched an $825 million, five-year fundraising campaign of which $50M will come from online donors. The Director leads a team of 5, reports directly to the Vice President of Development, and manages an integrated team of online fundraisers to support and grow Earthjustice’s extensive online donor community across multiple platforms. The Director is responsible for designing, managing and evaluating all of Earthjustice’s online fundraising strategies in coordination with Earthjustice’s website and email advocacy and engagement program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Development Leadership Team (10%)
Serve as a productive, collaborative and supportive member of the Development Leadership Team to enhance coordination, planning and implementation of online fundraising across all revenue streams and to successfully and creatively meet challenges facing the department.
Website Fundraising Tools and Projects (15%)
Work closely with colleagues across the Development and Communications teams to produce engaging interactive digital content that connects our donors with the Earthjustice mission.
Manage web-related fundraising projects, coordinating goals, staff, and resources.
Online Fundraising (25%)
Lead strategy and execution of Earthjustice’s digital campaigns for new donor acquisition, fundraising, and donor engagement.
Responsible for achieving donor and prospect list size and revenue growth goals as set out by the annual fundraising plan.
Create communications and cultivation programs for donors to ensure that interactions with Earthjustice are of the highest quality possible.
Responsible for the management of email- and web-based fundraising and relationship-building campaigns.
Develop list selection, segmentation and testing strategies, and spearhead message development strategy for public support efforts with program and communications staff and consultants.
Work with each Development team responsible for securing public support, mid-level giving, legacy giving, and major gifts to coordinate solicitations, qualification and cultivation of donors online.
Work with the Prospect Manager to qualify donor prospects and facilitate the transfer of these donors between relevant revenue programs, developing a strong pipeline for future Major Gifts and Planned Giving donor prospects.
Develop annual income and expense budgets for Digital Fundraising.
Manage annual expenses and is accountable for the overall profitability of the direct response fundraising program. Ensure a strong gross and net return on investment.
Create strategies and develop customized donor-centric approaches that achieve high conversion, retention, acquisition, and loyalty to move donors up the giving pyramid.
Work with staff responsible for internal information management and databases to ensure integration with online databases, both in the short term and long term.
Oversee development and maintenance of online systems, including EveryAction CRM.
Partner with Manager of Outreach & Membership Services to ensure systems meet constituent needs and enhance workflows.
Manage relations with key vendors for online fundraising and oversee the use of tools they provide.
Interdepartmental Collaboration (20%)
Liaise with Director of Outreach & Membership Services to create integrated direct response strategy for public support fundraising via digital and direct mail efforts.
Collaborate with Development, Communications, and Program staff on developing message strategies and initiating online email messaging and fundraising efforts. Communicate priorities and deadlines.
Identify reporting and analytical needs and coordinate with the various department heads to meet their needs.
Serve as liaison between the Development and Communications departments.
Management (Essential Qualifications) (20%)
Develop plans for online fundraising and integrate online efforts with the rest of Earthjustice’s Development teams and outreach programs.
Hire online consultants and vendors, negotiate contracts, and manage all aspects of relationships. Ensure that all state reporting requirements related to contracts with professional fundraising firms are met.
Recruit and hire qualified candidates who fit position requirements and the work environment.
Promote change in terms of the expected benefits, as well as removing or lowering the impact of potential obstacles.
Set clear team direction that aligns with Earthjustice strategy, mission, and vision.
Develop staff by identifying and encouraging training and professional development opportunities appropriate to role and creating development plans for all staff.
Provide staff with consistent performance feedback—both positive and constructive—and act as a coach and mentor.
Create a learning culture, by encouraging debriefing after completion of significant stages of projects.
Ensure that any direct reports who have supervisory responsibility are properly executing those functions.
Create a respectful and inclusive work environment for team and model respectful and inclusive behavior.
Promptly address micro-aggressions and other concerns brought to their attention.
Resolve interpersonal conflict among team members and bring in outside facilitators as needed.
Communicate regularly with existing employees and encourage staff to raise concerns and to provide ongoing feedback.
Create or identify strategic opportunities for team building and individual and overall staff engagement with one another in order to strengthen teamwork, interaction and collaboration.

Online Fundraising Assistant
7+ years’ experience with using online communications to attract and grow a donor base. Experience specifically with online communications initiatives involving fundraising, social media, writing projects; web development; eCRM software; and marketing strongly preferred. Staff management experience
Broad understanding of Internet technology and technology application in the business environment.
Interest in exploring new technologies and practices to communicate with an online audience.

The ability to collaborate and work effectively with others is critical.
Experience applying technology to law firms and/or nonprofit organizations.

Strong understanding of eCRM tools and implementation.
Strong understanding of fundraising mechanics.
Strong knowledge of current and developing online fundraising strategies, social media, mobile and new technologies.
Must understand “best practices” across multiple platforms and have the knowledge base to develop “best practices” for emerging media types.
Interest in exploring new technologies and practices to communicate with an online audience.
Strong familiarity with environmental issues and a passion for protecting the environment.
Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.

Salary range in San Francisco, CA and New York, NY: $156,200 - $173,600
Salary range in Washington, DC: $148,500 - $165,000
Salary range in other locations may range from: $132,000 - $165,000
