Legal Document: Citizens Sue To Block Installation Of LED Streetlights That Would Kill Seabirds And Sea Turtles

Environmental groups Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund and Conservation Council for Hawaiʻi, represented by Earthjustice, brought suit to block the replacement of approximately 4,800 streetlight fixtures across Maui County with new LED fixtures that threaten to kill or injure critically imperiled seabirds and sea turtles. The County of Maui Department of Public Works violated the Hawaiʻi Environmental Policy Act by moving forward with the project, in conjunction with Maui Electric Company, without the legally mandated environmental review.

Grizzly Rules Prompt Lawsuit Threat To Flathead Forest Plan

Josh Purtle, Attorney, Northern Rockies Office, Earthjustice: “The plan allows a huge amount of new road building to the detriment of grizzly bears and bull trout. It essentially says we’re going to change the requirements where you can build a road and how many miles you can build while maintaining the 2011 habitat conditions to protect grizzlies. But the plan doesn’t actually do that.”
