The Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi)—the “lobo” of Southwestern lore—is the most genetically distinct lineage of wolves in the Western Hemisphere.

Mexican gray wolves once numbered in the thousands throughout the southwestern U.S. and Mexico, but now there is only a single Mexican gray wolf population that lives in the mountains of central Arizona and New Mexico. Only about one hundred lobos survive in the wild.
