Guide to Searching the BDEAL Archive

Keyword search results include all search terms given.

Searching on permit challenge will show results that contain both the words "permit" and "challenge".

Exception When no results contain all keywords, the search will show results that contain any of the search terms.

Results include search terms at the beginning or end of words.

Plurals and other variations are included in results.

Searching on enforce will show results with the words "enforce", "enforcement", "enforceable", "enforced", etc.

Caution Searching on terms that partial match to many unintended words — for example, pro se — may result in too many search results. In this situation, use double quotes to specify an exact phrase: "pro se".

Use the filters to narrow search results.

The numbers in parentheses next to filter options indicate the number of results that match that filter.

To search on exact phrases, uses double quotes.

Searching on "Clean Air Act" will show results that contain the phrase "Clean Air Act".

Searching on Clean Air Act — without double quotes — will show results that contain the individual words "clean", "air", and "act".

Caution If an exact phrase has many matches, the search may take longer than expected. If your search never completes, try this workaround:

  1. Enter your keyword search without double quotes.
  2. When the search completes, type ctrl-f to open your browser's ‘Find in page’ feature. Type in your phrase, without double quotes.
  3. Your browser will highlight instances where the exact phrase appears in the results.

To exclude results with certain words, use the minus sign (-) before the term to exclude.

air -EPA will show results that contain the word "air" and do not contain the word "EPA".

Certain symbols are forbidden in searches.

For example, the plus sign (+), used in some advanced searches to require a keyword, cannot be used in searches of the BDEAL archive.
