The Anishinaabe people of northern Minnesota have waged a seven-year effort to stop the Line 3 pipeline from being built in the heart of territory where they retain the rights to hunt, fish, and harvest wild rice and other plants. The proposed pipeline would carry 760,000 barrels of tar sands of oil per day, destroying sacred places and locking in decades of rising climate pollution at a time when we cannot afford anymore. Tell the Biden administration to support the people, not the polluters, and stop the Line 3 pipeline.
In November 2020, under the Trump administration, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a permit for the Line 3 pipeline without considering the climate implications of transporting massive amounts of oil and its impacts on tribal resources. The Corps also failed to give adequate consideration to the extent of the damage that the construction of Line 3 would cause to wetlands and waterways, including the wasteful use of billions of gallons of water from aquifers and watersheds.
Unfortunately, the Biden administration recently caved to Big Oil by supporting the Trump administration’s approval of Line 3 despite President Biden’s stated commitments to fight climate change and support Indigenous interests. President Biden and the Army Corps still have the power to withdraw the federal permits needed to continue with construction. We need your help to tell the president and his administration to get serious about environmental justice and the climate emergency.
Right now, as the country faces historic droughts and heatwaves, a seemingly endless fire season, and the prospect of yet another treacherous hurricane season, the Biden administration’s bold commitment to tackling climate change and prioritizing the rights of Indigenous communities is facing a significant test.
If the president is genuine in his pledge to take climate justice and tribal rights seriously, his administration must stop defending these Trump-era permits and undertake a genuine analysis of Line 3's environmental and human impacts.
The Biden administration cannot tackle the climate crisis while bowing to the needs of Big Oil and allowing destructive fossil fuel projects to continue. Take action today and remind the Biden administration of its promises to protect our climate and address environmental racism.
