The New York State Legislature has passed S4722A/A5386A, which will establish the New York Soil Health and Climate Resiliency Act to enhance and maintain the health and resilience of agricultural soils. It is now up to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to pass the bill into law.
The following is a statement from Peter Lehner, Managing Attorney for the Sustainable Food and Farming Program at Earthjustice:
“The climate crisis harms our food security and our farmers. Improving soil health will protect both. Taking steps now to support sustainable agricultural practices will have many benefits, from improving soil fertility to protecting water quality, from helping curb climate change to building resilience to climate change, from enhancing biodiversity to diversifying our farm economy. We applaud Senator Hinchey, Assemblywoman Lupardo, and their fellow legislators for passing the Soil Health and Climate Resiliency Act. With the power of his pen, Governor Cuomo can sign these protections into law.”
