Preventing Oil Spills in U.S. Waters

What’s at Stake

The rule is designed to prevent discharges of oil into U.S. waters, and to contain those discharges if they occur.

Oil industry groups challenged an Environmental Protection Agency rule defining which waters enjoy certain federal protections from oil spills. Earthjustice intervened to oppose the industry challenge.

In March 2008, a federal district court invalidated the rule.
