Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that it would take comment on a draft agency-wide adaptation plan addressing climate change. Adaptation planning accounts for climate changes that are expected to occur, incorporating climate change considerations into the agency’s internal and external programs and policies. The draft plan also addresses coordination between EPA and its partners and stakeholders to address climate change.EPA’s plan rests on President Obama’s 2009 Executive Order 13514 on Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance as well as the March 2001 Implementing Instructions to all Federal Agencies.

“We have already seen and felt the impacts of climate change through more violent storms, extreme drought and rampant wildfire across our country.

“We are pleased the EPA is getting its house in order to respond to climate change impacts on its personnel, facilities and programs. This type of planning can be used to inspire states, regions, localities and individuals to follow suit. While we often hear a lot about addressing the causes of climate change, there is much that needs to be done to prepare for the changes that are already upon us.”
