Today Virginia Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA), a stalwart champion for environmental protections, announced his retirement. Congressman Moran represented the 8th District of Virginia since 1991 and joined the House Appropriations Committee 20 years ago. He is currently the ranking Democrat of the House Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee.  The following is a statement from Marty Hayden, Vice President of Policy and Legislation regarding Mr. Moran’s announcement.

“Congressman Moran has been a tenacious advocate for adequately funding the programs that protect our air, water, public lands, fish and wildlife. He also diligently represents the interests of his constituents.

“He secured the recently announced project to restore Dyke Marsh, one of the most treasured natural areas in Northern Virginia, and fought to close a highly polluting coal-fired power plant that no longer threatens the health of Alexandria residents.

“As the senior Democrat on the Interior/EPA appropriations subcommittee he is the leader in fighting the numerous anti-environmental provisions in spending bills that seek to weaken protections for our National Parks, National Forests, air, water and public health. While we are very sorry to learn of his pending retirement, Earthjustice is extremely grateful for the tireless dedication he has shown for protecting our environment and public health for more than two decades.”
