Today, national environmental law firm Earthjustice issued a statement in support of California’s Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León’s SB100, a bill that will transition the state to a zero-carbon energy by 2045. Earthjustice recently launched Right to Zero, a campaign to move California to entirely zero-emissions energy and transportation for our health and our climate.

The following statement is from Erica Martinez, Earthjustice’s California Policy Advocate:

“Senate Bill 100 is good for Californians and good for our climate. Pushing our state to a 100 percent clean energy grid by 2045 is a key stepping stone in building a clean air, clean energy future for California today.

“However, SB100 must get to Governor Jerry Brown’s desk by Friday if it is going to pass this year. California’s leaders in the legislature must breathe life into SB100 and move it forward in the next four days before the legislative session ends. Now more than ever, we need strong leadership from our elected leaders in this state to wean California off of fossil fuels and chart a better course for the rest of the country.

“Despite a legacy in climate leadership, California is home to the worst air quality in the nation, with six of the ten most polluted cities in America. Many of the communities suffering from the most polluted air and distressing asthma rates are our communities of color. SB100 can help us turn this environmental injustice around. We urge our elected leaders to make the right choice, the easy choice, for California and pass SB100.”
