This week, the Supreme Court of the United States, in a 5-4 decision, acknowledged that the Trump administration had concealed its true political motivation for including a citizenship question on the 2020 Census, and had publically relied on a contrived and pretextual rationale.
“We are glad that the Supreme Court recognized that the administration’s stated reasons for adding a citizenship question were just a smokescreen to conceal its discriminatory motivations,” said Sam Sankar, Senior Vice President of Programs at Earthjustice. “The Justices were right to stop the administration from claiming that the citizenship question was anything besides an attempt to disadvantage immigrants and people of color. Instead of trying to put more lipstick on this pig, the Commerce Department should accept the Court’s judgment and get on with conducting an untainted census.”
“This case should remind us again of how critical our courts are for holding our government accountable to the people, and we proudly stand with the ACLU and all those fighting to preserve this basic promise of our democracy,” Sankar said.
