Today, President Biden nominated adjunct Georgetown University Professor Monica Medina to serve as assistant secretary in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Science Affairs at the State Department. The bureau’s mission is to advance America’s security and prosperity through international leadership on oceans, environment, science, space, and health.

Medina formerly served as a principal deputy under secretary of commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, director of ocean policy at the National Geographic Society and as general counsel of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The following is a statement from Earthjustice’s Associate Legislative Counsel for Lands Wildlife and Oceans Danny Folds:

“This week’s International Climate Summit has underscored that collective action is essential to combating climate change. Monica Medina understands that the U.S. can — and must — advance international collaboration on climate policy. Her impressive record of national and international leadership shows she can engage others on solutions for pressing environmental challenges. Monica is the leader we need as we return to the world stage and chart a new course towards science-based, equitable decision-making for the environment.”
