Earthjustice is excited to announce that Stuart Clarke has become the new chair of the organization’s Board of Trustees.

Clarke is a seasoned environmental leader who has served on the Earthjustice Board since 2020, and who also serves as the Director of the Watershed Protection Program at the William Penn Foundation. Clarke previously served as Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science, and spent 15 years as the Executive Director of the Town Creek Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to providing resources to help catalyze, support, and accelerate progressive changes in environmental policy and practice within the state of Maryland. As Executive Director, Clarke secured financial support for various critical efforts ranging from protecting the Chesapeake Bay to strengthening Maryland’s adoption of renewable energy infrastructure.

Throughout his career, Clarke has been an active board member of numerous philanthropic and environmental organizations including The Energy Foundation, The Chesapeake Bay Trust, Greenpeace, the Maryland League of Conservation Voters, The Environmental Grantmakers Association, and the Blue Mountain Center. Clarke considers his most rewarding professional experiences to be those supporting the work and encouraging the ambition of young environmental leaders.

“The earth has never been in greater need of a good lawyer than it is right now, so I am terribly honored to be entrusted with the responsibility of serving and supporting the fabulous Earthjustice Board and the spectacular Earthjustice staff”, Clarke said in a statement.

“We are beyond fortunate to have Stuart at the helm of our ship, steering Earthjustice with the vision, clarity, and steady drive that is needed in this time of environmental crisis.” said Earthjustice President Abigail Dillen. “Stuart brings truly exceptional rigor and the best kind of humanity to the hard work of systems change — not only seeing the pathways but actually getting to the destination. I am so grateful to be working with such a wise, inspiring, and effective partner.”

Clarke earned his Bachelor of Arts in Government & Law from LaFayette College and did graduate work at Yale University.
