Today, President Trump nominated Kathleen Sgamma to head the Bureau of Land Managment (BLM). Sgamma is currently the President of the Western Energy Alliance, an oil and gas trade organization that advocates for increased oil and gas production on public lands while cutting critical lands protections. She also authored the energy section of the Project 2025 chapter about the Interior Department.
As BLM Director, Sgamma would oversee the implementation of President Trump’s executive orders on over 245 million acres of federal land and 700 million acres of mineral estate.
“Picking an advocate for the oil and gas industry like Sgamma shows just how little this administration values good stewardship of our nation’s public lands,” said Drew Caputo, Vice President of Litigation at Earthjustice. “Anyone who cherishes the open spaces, cultural sites, diverse habitats, and recreational opportunities offered by our public lands should be concerned about the agenda of corporate polluters overshadowing all other values. Sgamma’s nomination sends a clear message that our public lands are up for sale to the highest bidder.”
