This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it would regulate PFAS under three forthcoming water rules that fall under the wastewater pollution guidelines. The new plan will revise current limitations for industrial discharges of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The plan would also address PFAS discharges from chromium electroplating facilities.
The following is a statement from Christine Santillana, Legislative Counsel for Healthy Communities:
“EPA’s Effluent Guidelines Program plan takes minimal steps towards regulating industrial discharges of toxic PFAS. Given the extensive contamination to communities and the widespread use of PFAS across multiple industries, EPA must swiftly regulate and expand its list of industries who are polluting our surface waters. Senator Gillibrand and Representative Pappas’ Clean Water Standards for PFAS Act aims to do just that. The bill was included in the House infrastructure package, INVEST in America Act, as Congress understands the urgency for stopping PFAS pollution at the source.”
