Conservation Groups Comments on Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 259 and 261 Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement

It is imperative to minimize further oil and gas leasing and development in the Gulf of Mexico to protect the wellbeing of Gulf Coast communities and
abide by our nation’s climate commitments. This Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) process provides the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) an opportunity to take a hard look at the environmental, health, and social harms from Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) development and give them appropriate consideration when exercising its discretion in holding Lease Sales 259 and 261. The National Environmental Policy Act process provides guidance for BOEM’s decision-making process for those sales.

Stakeholder Feedback on Clean Hydrogen Production Standard Draft Guidance

Feedback on the Department of Energy’s (DOE) draft guidance on the Clean Hydrogen Production Standard (CHPS). Zero-emission hydrogen production technology is commercially available and ready to scale. This technology relies entirely on new, dedicated renewable resources to power electrolysis. DOE should not squander scarce public resources on technologies with no role in a feasible long-term strategy for limiting warming to 1.5°C. A stringent CHPS and rigorous carbon accounting in CHPS implementation are necessary to direct funding to projects that will most likely contribute to this deep decarbonization target.

Poisonous Coverup: The Widespread Failure of the Power Industry to Clean Up Coal Ash Dumps

In every state where coal is burned, the utility industry is violating a federal regulation known as the Coal Ash Rule. The result is widespread groundwater contamination that threatens our drinking water supplies and aquatic life. This report presents evidence of contamination at more power plants than previously documented – bringing the total to over 265 sites – and also describes the pervasive noncompliance that continues to prevent environmental restoration.

Disparities of industrial animal operations in California, Iowa, and North Carolina

Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) densely house thousands of animals in confined areas. CAFOs in the United States commonly store animal manure in open lagoons and apply manure to nearby fields. These processes can pollute the water and air with pathogens and chemicals that impair the quality of life and physical health of neighboring communities. Iowa (IA) and North Carolina (NC) are two of the leading swine producers in the United States, while California (CA) is the nation’s leading milk producer. Report by Quist, Johnston, and Fliss.
