Earthjustice President Abigail Dillen released this statement today on the anniversary of the attack on the nation’s Capitol:

“The anniversary of the January 6 attack at the Capitol is a stark reminder that we cannot take our democracy for granted. We actively need to safeguard it.

“Since the insurrection, anti-democracy efforts have proliferated across our country at the state level. Many state legislatures have passed laws curtailing ballot access and making it easier for partisan officials to overturn the will of the people. Without the ability to freely elect our leaders, we cannot hope to address climate change, protect our air and water, and restore a healthy planet. If the integrity of the vote is not protected, our democracy cannot stand.

“Members of Congress must treat this moment with the urgency it warrants. They must stand up for justice and democracy and enshrine permanent voter protections into law by passing federal legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. We can all play a role in protecting democracy and ensuring justice for all. That starts with our vote.”
