The Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund announced today that it is changing its name to Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund, effective immediately. The decision was made by unanimous vote of the group’s Board of Trustees meeting in Tiburon, California, on June 14.
“It’s time to change,” said R. Frederic Fisher, Chairman of the group’s board. “We began small 26 years ago, doing work primarily on behalf of the Sierra Club. Now we’re widely known as ‘the law firm for the environment’ because we serve the entire environmental community on a wide range of concerns. We value our historic ties with the Sierra Club and will continue to represent the Club in cases of regional and national significance.”
Carl Pope, Executive Director of the Sierra Club, said, “The Sierra Club congratulates the Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund on this decision. It’s a great organization and we look forward to a strong and continuing relationship.”
Vawter Parker, acting president of Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund, said, “The trustees feel that Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund better describes both the work of the ogranization and the broad diversity of organizations we represent, from national and international environmental organizations to community environmental justice advocates to salmon fishermen.”
