The following statement regarding today’s nomination by President Obama of Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court is from Earthjustice president, Trip Van Noppen:

"Earthjustice is pleased to see that the president has nominated a brilliant legal scholar with an impeccable knowledge of the law. As the law firm for the environment, we depend on smart, impartial judicial review and we welcome President Obama’s nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to serve as the next justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

"General Kagan is a thoughtful nominee with a proven commitment to upholding the Constitution and the environmental laws of our country. Polluters have been hard at work attacking our nation’s strongest environmental laws in an effort to undermine public health protections. The courts are the great equalizer, where average citizens seeking protections for their communities can go to be heard. Filling the Supreme Court with fair and impartial justices is critical.

"We sincerely hope the U.S. Senate gives General Kagan a fair and swift confirmation hearing."
