Today President Obama nominated Gina McCarthy to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. McCarthy currently serves as Assistant Administrator of EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.

The following statement is from Earthjustice President Trip Van Noppen:

“Gina McCarthy is well-qualified to lead the EPA due to her long history working for the environment at the Connecticut DEP, the state of Massachusetts and her years as an assistant administrator at EPA.

“Ms. McCarthy faces many challenges leading the EPA given the political demagoguery the agency has been unfairly subjected to for the past four years. We also know she can stand up to defend her agency against bullies on Capitol Hill when necessary. Ms. McCarthy is going to be a vital player in meeting the President’s State of the Union commitment to tackle climate change and we look forward to working with her. It is critical that the Senate move quickly to confirm her.”
