The Trump administration’s Department of Energy (DOE) recently provided new direction to states, territories, and tribes carrying out rebate programs under the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) Program. Earthjustice Senior Legislative Representative Anne Clement issued the following statement in response:

“The Department of Energy’s changes to the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates Program restrict consumer choice by prohibiting rebates to consumers who make the switch from fossil fuel appliances to electric appliances. This move directly conflicts with the federal statute establishing the Program and undermines the transition to clean, electric home appliances that can save consumers money.”

A large pot of popping corn covered by a glass lid obscured by steam sits on a black induction cooktop setup on a raised surface. Next to it are containers of salt, cooking oil, and popcorn bags. Two people wearing black t-shirts (one with the logo for Earthjustice's Right to Zero campaign, and the other for Beyond Gas D.C.) stand behind the induction cooktop, gesturing towards the cooktop.
The shift to state-of-the-art appliances in homes, such as induction stoves, offers major clean air benefits, upgrades in energy efficiency, and climate protections. (Matt Roth for Earthjustice)
