“Company behind this ... is back!
“BP's Deepwater Horizon oil spill was the most destructive in U.S. history. Now, the company wants to go into deeper and riskier waters in the Gulf.
“15 years after the worst oil spill in U.S. history, BP is asking the federal government to approve a new, massive offshore drilling project in the Gulf. This high pressure, high temperature oil project is six times more likely to experience a loss-of-control incident, the same type of incident that caused the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
“In a loss-of-control incident, BP's Kaskida project has the potential to spill up to 4.5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf, and it could take 100 days or more to control the spill. For reference, Deepwater Horizon took 87 days to contain.
“Even without a spill, Kaskida would disturb fragile deep-sea coral, which provide essential and delicate deep-sea habitats, and would disturb the Rice's whale, which only have an estimated 51 remaining in the wild. These were already severely damaged by the Deepwater Horizon spill.
“We know that deepwater drilling is dangerous and costly. We can't let the oil industry continue this dangerous trend with Kaskida.
“Trump's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has until August 29th to decide whether to approve Kaskida. Tell the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management that this ultra deepwater project is too dangerous to proceed. Take action at earthjustice.org/kaskida.”
