Fish and Wildlife Service failed to see any real danger

It's hard to imagine—as we watch birds, turtles, dolphins and other animals struggle and die in the oil from BP's blown-out well—that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported just three years ago that drilling in the Gulf of Mexico posed little risk to animal life.

A memo to that effect, unveiled by the New York Times and reported by AP, was sent by the agency to the Minerals Management Service as part of its assessment of various Gulf drilling operations, including the Deepwater Horizon operation that blew out April 20. Oil from the well continues gushing at an estimated 2.4 million gallons a day.

We long have known that the MMS was too friendly with the oil industry—a fact that came to public light when the BP spill occurred and led to federal investigations and a shakeup of the agency. But, it is especially troubling to find how willing the FWS was to endorse MMS's flawed oversight. The FWS is, after all, the one agency whose mission is to protect our endangered and threatened wildlife.

The cascade of revelations about failed government oversight also includes the National Marine Fisheries Service, which likewise concluded that Gulf drilling was of little risk to endangered or threatened species in the Gulf.

If there's a clear and immediate lesson from all this, it's that we need a full investigation of how oil drilling leases are approved, and the drilling itself overseen. It's not just the MMS that's corrupted. The whole process is suspect.

Well done! Thank you very much for professional templates and community edition

The backing of powerful self seeking interests is required if one wants to become a serious candidate. The news establishment in general sings love songs about this or that candidate for House, Senate or the Presidency, and avoids straight investigative reporting. It's wonderful to be in my 8th decade of life because I know I'll be leaving this world before the worst effects of human greed, stupidity and intolerance take hold and the planetary house of cards collapses

i think that this oil spill crisis is some bull shit

The date of the memo is significant. The administration at the time hae as its environmental science advisor a person affiliated with fossil fuel interests. The party line seemed to be total full throttle "development" (grabbing of earth's resources) at any cost to the well-being of the planet and its living inhabitants, human or otherwise. Sorry, but our system of government is seriously flawed. The backing of powerful self seeking interests is required if one wants to become a serious candidate. Too bad about the "WAUG Kids" - the What About Us? Generations that will be born in the rest of this century.

The US Government has promised transparency in all matters pertaining to the Gulf Disaster. Maybe it is time to seek further assurances that the sea food is truly safe to eat, the air is truly safe to breathe and that the rains which are falling, supposedly to nourish the land, are not toxic at all. Assurances too that BP will pay your claims!! ....... And yes Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus.

A final word Mr. President: Are you feeding seafood from the Gulf of Mexico to your children? Are you going to send them down to the Gulf for a vacation, to play on the sand and breathe in the air? Will they go swimming in the warm waters also?

just an observation....the article title does not tie in well with it's content. Certainly we can argue any impact is to great (doesn't provide much guidance to how and act in society, but that is an arguement).

The article offers nothing on how that memo was wrong...just hangs there implying what ???
