President travels to Louisiana, oil spill travels to Florida

Fresh off a "Larry King Live" appearance (see below) in which he said "BP has to shut down this well," a "furious" President Obama flew to Louisiana today to meet with regional officials and beleaguered local residents as new events unfolded in the BP oil spill saga. The president hooked BP with fresh barbs, criticizing a $50 million TV ad campaign designed to salvage the company's image when what truly needs salvaging are the oil-soaked beaches, wetlands, wildlife, and businesses of Gulf Coast states.

President Obama's third visit to the Gulf since the spill's start transpired as tar balls began peppering Florida's sandy beaches, just hours after BP installed a "top cap," the company's latest attempt to contain the hemorrhaging well.

BP officials said the cap should eventually be able to capture as much as 90 percent of the flowing oil, but frankly, their words inspire about as much confidence as a three-legged race horse. Particularly since the company has had nearly as much trouble containing the flow of clumsy and insensitive comments from its loose-lipped CEO, Tony Hayward, as it has arresting the oil gusher it created.

Let's hope that the latest attempts bring some success and that the Obama administration will direct all the necessary resources to cleaning up this spill and helping out the Gulf residents who have been impacted. Meanwhile, Earthjustice attorneys are working hard to ensure that the lax oversight and cozy relationships between industry and government that precipitated this mess become a thing of the past. A clean energy future is waiting for us on the other side of this oil spill, and I, for one, am looking forward to getting there.

this is very sad but it could have been any oil company remember it is international water and any country can set a well in the gulf as is right now china has rigs out there pumping oil to us what can be done to prvent this from ever happening again. and is the blow out valve always going to work. its sad that it takes a huge disaster to stop and say well if we would have put this part in that is regulary available. remeber this could have been any comany or country off of our coast.

This is nice post which I was awaiting for such an artice and I have gained some useful information from this site. Thanks for sharing this information.

All Americans should see this first hand, not just on the news. Meet those of us who’s live are being totally altered, look us in the eyes and shake our hand so you can share the feelings and see the effect of the largest man made disaster, in the history of man, on the environment and economy of one of the most beautiful and productive places on earth. This is not the time to abandon us and go somewhere else on vacation and “relax“, there will be time for that after we respond to this enemy head on together. There is a saying that goes “some men are born great, others have greatness thrust upon them“. No one wanted this disaster but now is the time to prove what you are made of. Maybe it is your time to shine and be great. You will be rewarded in ways you cannot imagine, but if you do nothing how will you feel? Please, be GREAT. There has never been a better time for it than now. Thank you for reading this, please pass it on.

The only thing like it would be WWII and we did it as a unit. The same urgency is needed here and now- not tomorrow or when the oil is washing up around Washington, DC. Make this your priority and part of every conversation you have, we need action at every level. Look into getting your HAZWOPER training, talk with your employer and see if it can be arranged where you work. Plan a vacation with your family where, after you are trained, you together can volunteer.

Please every able bodied man and woman get training and prepare to help. Please call your Congressman and Senator and tell them for your further support they need to provide for the preparations of the biggest clean up in history. We do not have time to wait for inept BP to think about how it will save money on the clean up. We will have plenty of time to track down who is responsible and have them pay later. Now, as never before in most of our lifetimes, has there been a need to mobilize our great nation.

This is all so idiotic and just a PR stunt. It's impossible to capture 2000? gallons a minute of oil with this this inverted teacup their using. To move 2000 gallons a minute up to a boat is a joke.
