It's time for U.S. to stop opposing regulations

Emissions from aircraft are a substantial contributor to global warming. Taking into account greenhouse gas emissions, the warming effect of contrails and aviation-induced cirrus clouds, and anticipated growth in air traffic, scientists estimate that aircraft could be responsible for as much as 10 percent of human-caused global warming by 2050. So, of course the airlines are working hard to reduce these emissions, right?

Wrong. For more than a decade, the industry-influenced International Civil Aviation Organization has rejected calls to regulate greenhouse gas pollution from aircraft. Finally, fed up with inaction at the international level, Europe decided to lead the way to a solution.

Under a European regulation to go into effect in 2012, flights into or out of European airports will have to account for their contribution to global warming, and will have to buy permits for emissions exceeding 85 percent of historical amounts (if they reduce their emissions enough, they can sell their excess permits for a profit).

It’s a good start at reducing planes’ contribution to global warming. It will reduce emissions equivalent to taking 30 million cars off the road each year and create industry-wide incentives for deeper cuts. But the industry objected. Along with their industry associations, Continental, United and American Airlines sued in European courts, arguing that the European regulations violated international law. They also convinced the U.S. government to threaten retaliation if U.S. airlines are forced to comply.

Earthjustice intervened in the European court to defend the law. Recently , Europe’s highest court rejected the airlines’ arguments, ruling that the European measure does not violate international law.

This is good news for the planet. Now the airlines should follow suit. Instead of trying to avoid responsibility for their contribution to global warming, U.S. airlines should pressure the federal government to level the playing field by imposing equivalent restrictions on aircraft using U.S. airports. And in the meantime, they should begin adapting their practices and planes to be a bit more friendly to the skies and the planet.

Global warming and economic unsustainability are ALL about OUR/YOUR OVER-consumption of fossil fuels and Energy WASTE.
America continues to WASTE over 70% of the Energy we consume.
Our cultural WASTE is omnipresent, and continues as if it does not matter.
Americans need to be told and ever reminded of the importance to 'STOP the/our/your Energy WASTE'.
All of the current & future improvements in Energy efficiency and improved auto millage, do not begin to compare with the immediate(today) ability to drastically reduce our energy demand; simply by eliminating unnecessary energy consumption.
BILLIONS of lights burn unnecessarily every day and night throughout AMERICA.
America OVER-heats and OVER-cools and OVER-lights as if it doesn't matter.
BILLIONS of gallons of fuel are WASTED every year by unnecessary driving.
Municipalities and SCHOOLS are the worst offenders when it comes to conservation.
There are still NO regulations or enforceable laws governing our hedonist squandering of our children's Energy future.
ONLY with an economic reward/consequence incentive (America must tax energy; in lieu of income taxes) will Americans care to 'STOP the/our/your Energy WASTE'

One of your operatives, Rosenthal, speaks about "participation", so let me participate. The global warming temperature signal as determined by the UNFCCCs and UNIPCCs scientists is nothing remarkable, similar warming periods have happened before 1950.
So here's my input to you. I despise people working against the progression of humanity, especially when they do so without a democratic mandate. So I would urge you to form a political party and see how much of the electorate actually supports your position. What you are doing is working behind the scenes and against the will of the majority of the population. So I'd call you authoritarian; again, something that I deeply despise.

.
Yes, warming has been seen pre-1950, or pre-Industrial Revolution that is more than we're currently seeing. That cycle has been going on for about 2.5 million years.

However, the temp hasn't risen this fast in the last 400,000 years. In fact some data seems to indicate that the temperature rate of increase is unprecedented for the last 65 million years. The trouble isn't the temperature change right now. The trouble is how fast it's changing.

Once we pass the 3°C global average increase, we'll start seeing other things happening, but right now all the impacts are tied to how fast things are changing.

You don't have to be a climate scientist to see the changes. Have a look at a basic tool for gardeners, the Hardiness Zone Map. This link even provides an animation of the changes from 1990 to 2006.

Also, I recommend you do more research before throwing out claims and statistics about what the majority wants:

Poll: Majority of Americans Understand Global Warming Worsens Extreme Weather and Want Nation to Act | ThinkProgress http://j.mp/v7XXJC

You may feel the source is biased, but the data cited is verified. Even the very conservative Rassumussen polls are showing it:

Energy Update - Rasmussen Reports™ http://j.mp/toqd45

If you are as fair minded as you seem to be implying, go get the real data about what is happening, not the biased information that simply supports what you'd like to believe.

And just as you would with medical advice, make sure you've got the consensus opinion from the climate scientists, not something that's been trumped up by the likes of Heartland Institute or Rush Limbaugh.

Airplanes are not only responsible for CO2. Recent research suggests that the local health impacts of airplanes for local residents may be significant:
