CA Groups Challenge Mexico’s “Mega Resorts”
Scoop San Diego : April 15, 2013

Summary:  Earthjustice and AIDA, representing local and international environmental organizations, are challenging Mexico’s approval of four massive developments in the Gulf of California. The Mexican government approved the projects without conducting appropriate assessments of how they would impact the ecosystem, which has an extremely high level of biodiversity. In doing so, it ignored its own laws.

"The Mexican agencies responsible for enforcing these laws are really just looking the other way. They're allowing environmental impact assessments to be done piece-meal, so that they're not taking a comprehensive look at all of the impacts,” said Earthjustice attorney Sarah Burt. Regarding the groups represented in the case, she added, "They're not against development across-the-board," she explains. "They just want to make sure that it's done in a smart, sustainable way. And, complying with, you know, existing environmental safeguards that are on the books is a necessary first step."
