Government sued over Navy sonar testing plan
Island Television KITV 4 : December 16, 2013

Summary:  A lawsuit filed in Hawaiʻi federal court challenges the National Marine Fisheries Service’s approval of a 5-year plan by the U.S. Navy for testing and training activities in a huge area of the Pacific ocean off Hawaiʻi and Southern California. The Navy and Fisheries Service estimate this training will cause 9.6 million instances of harm to whales, dolphins and other marine mammals. The operations will include active sonar and explosives, which are known to cause permanent injuries and deaths to marine mammals.

"The same fisheries service just listed Hawaii's false killer whales as endangered, we are down to 150 of them, they are going to be subjected to this Navy training if we don't set aside a few protected areas where they can rest, feed, and survive," said David Henkin, the Earthjustice attorney handling the case.
