In response to the Supreme Court’s 6–3 ruling in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, siding with the New York NRA affiliate, Earthjustice’s Senior Vice President of Programs, Sam Sankar, issued the following statement:
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court’s new supermajority of conservative Justices ignores the horrific impact of gun violence in this country today and erroneously says that a law can address these modern problems only if the Court thinks that a similar law existed in the 18th century, when people only knew muskets, not semi-automatic weapons. Courts are filled with judges, not historians, and our safety should not depend on their predictions about what ‘the Framers would have thought.’ The overwhelming majority of Americans believe that gun violence is a serious problem, our elected officials are working to address it, and yet the Supreme Court today has advanced an ideological agenda to stop sensible policies that will reduce gun violence.”
