On the heels of last night’s speech by President Obama, the governor of Kansas is more resolute than ever in her opposition to the proposed Sunflower coal-fired power plant expansion. She vetoed pro-Sunflower legislation three times last year and is poised to do the same with a new bill coming to a vote tomorrow in the Legislature.
"It’s DOA with me, absolutely," Gov. Kathleen Sebelius told the Kansas City Star today. In a state brimming with alternative energy potential – and in light of new federal investments in clean energy – she said coal power is "a step backward."
Earthjustice poured considerable resources into supporting Sebelius’ stand against Sunflower, a 1,500 megawatt expansion that would have emitted 11 million tons of CO2 annually. Sebelius opposed the plant because of its global warming contributions.
