At a critical moment in our fight against the climate crisis and for a healthy environment for all, Earthjustice is proud to welcome Liz Moran as the organization’s first New York Policy Advocate based in Albany, NY. Moran is a veteran environmental policy advocate and is joining Earthjustice from New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) where she served as Environmental Policy Director.

During her time at NYPIRG, Moran led the organization’s environmental policy portfolio and helped organize communities across New York to advocate for a healthy environment and climate-smart energy.

“Communities across our country and New York are experiencing the harmful effects of the climate crisis, and there has never been a more important time to pass laws and promote policies and regulations that will protect our planet and our health,” said Liz Moran, New York Policy Advocate for the Earthjustice Northeast Regional Office. “It all comes full circle: to have healthy and strong communities, you must have a healthy environment supported by robust environmental laws and regulations. I’m proud to continue to advocate for environmental justice and look forward to helping advance climate solutions.”

New York legislators have set climate and environmental justice goals through the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) including 100% zero-emission electricity by 2040, 50% clean and renewable energy by 2030, 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and 40% of clean energy funds to be invested in under-resourced communities. Most recently, the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced draft regulations for the Advanced Clean Trucks rule which aims to achieve a zero-emissions future from medium and heavy-duty vehicles and reduce public health harms from air pollution exposure. Earlier this month, Gov. Hochul signed legislation establishing 2035 as the goal for all new passenger cars and trucks sold in New York to be zero emissions.

“We are thrilled that Liz Moran will be joining our Northeast office as our first New York Policy Advocate. She embodies the tenacity, skill, and passion for justice that we need to continue to do the important work of protecting the environment in New York and the surrounding region. With her long-standing commitment to this area, she brings the experience and demonstrated leadership that is essential to advance much needed climate-smart policies and regulations,” said Courtney Bowie, Managing Attorney for the Earthjustice Northeast Regional Office.

In honor of NYC Climate Week, Earthjustice is hosting a series of virtual panels discussing clean transportation, equitable climate policy, and the climate crisis.

Earthjustice continues its commitment to a clean and healthy environment for its people through policy and regulation advocacy and legal action.
