Earthjustice Managing Attorney Debbie Chizewer released this statement today about the planned nomination of Bryan Newland to serve as Assistant Secretary — Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the interior (DOI):
“Bryan Newland, the former president of the Bay Mills Indian Community, is an outstanding choice to serve as assistant secretary of Indian Affairs. Newland has a deep commitment to safeguarding the cultural heritage, lands, and waters of indigenous communities. He has done great work to protect the public health and the environment of the Bay Mills Indian Community. We look forward to seeing the results of his talent and dedication as the assistant secretary of Indian Affairs.”
Background
Bryan Newland was born on the Bay Mills (Ojibwe) Indian Reservation on the southern shore of Lake Superior. He served as chief judge of the Bay Mills Indian Community Tribal Court and was a counselor and policy adviser to the assistant secretary at DOI under the Obama administration. Since February, he has been principal assistant secretary for Indian Affairs.
