Today, both the New York State Senate and Assembly released their respective budget proposals. Of note, there were no rollbacks proposed for the climate law, Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

The following statement can be attributed to Liz Moran, New York Policy Advocate for Earthjustice:

“The Legislature’s respective budget proposals demonstrate that both houses are ready to stand up to protect New Yorkers from soaring energy bills and threats to their environment and public health. As the federal government continues to do everything in its power to benefit the oil and gas industry and engage in international conflict that is causing New Yorkers’ bills to rise, the Assembly and Senate have put forward policy solutions and smart clean energy investments that will protect New Yorkers.

It must be noted that absent from all three budget proposals is anything to weaken New York’s landmark climate law – it needs to stay this way. New York’s Climate Law, which the Governor has so far failed to implement, is not responsible for higher energy bills, and should not be negotiated under the darkness of the budget process. New Yorkers need the Governor and Legislature to stay squarely focused on actual solutions to energy affordability – not red herrings.”
