Abigail Dillen is the President of Earthjustice, the world’s largest nonprofit public interest environmental law organization, and President of Earthjustice’s partner organization Earthjustice Action, which focuses on securing fair courts and strong environmental laws. She leads over 640 staff in harnessing the power of law to protect the environment and people’s health in the U.S. and internationally.
As President, Dillen has led Earthjustice through a period of unprecedented organizational growth, more than doubling the organization’s staff capacity to take on the most important environmental fights.
Dillen joined Earthjustice in 2000, litigating to protect public lands and wildlife and restore healthy ecosystems. As the urgency of the climate crisis intensified, she founded and led Earthjustice’s coal program, which played a pivotal role in accelerating the retirement of coal-fired power plants across the United States. She went on to become the organization’s first Vice President of Litigation for Climate and Energy, directing its legal and advocacy strategy to advance climate solutions and the essential transition to clean energy. In 2018, the Earthjustice Board selected Dillen as President, recognizing a record defined by strategic vision, legal acumen, and unwavering commitment to environmental and social justice.
Dillen received her B.A. from Yale University and her law degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
