Avgas Sign-on Letter (August 2021)

The undersigned organizations and individuals submit this letter in support of the petition submitted on August 24, 2021, by Earthjustice, on behalf of Alaska Community Action on Toxics, Center for Environmental Health, Friends of the Earth, Montgomery-Gibbs Environmental Coalition, and Oregon Aviation Watch, and by the County of Santa Clara petitioning the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) to make an endangerment finding under section 231 of the Clean Air Act that leaded aviation gasoline (“avgas”) contributes to air pollution that harms public health and welfare.

Petition for Rulemaking, Avgas (August 2021)

On August 24, 2021, community groups from across the country represented by Earthjustice, together with the county of Santa Clara in California, filed a petition calling on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take the necessary steps to regulate lead pollution from aircraft, the largest source of lead emissions in the country. The petition comes as 39 organizations and individuals signed a letter calling on EPA to look into the issue.

Lead and Copper Rule Fact Sheet 2021

The Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) is a complex set of regulations established in 1991 under the Safe Drinking Water Act. While intended to protect the public from lead in drinking water, the LCR focuses only on detecting and preventing severe contamination across a community. It is not a health-based regulation and does not address high lead levels in individual homes. The LCR is outdated and flawed.

Community advocacy and environmental organizations, represented by Earthjustice, successfully sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2019 for failing to establish protective lead hazard standards for older housing and child-occupied facilities like schools and daycares.
