State delists endangered gray wolf and the hunt begins
Wolves perform a valuable ecological role and stand as a living symbol of wilderness. (NPS)

In Wyoming, wolves that were federally protected on Sept. 30 became legal vermin overnight—subject to being shot on sight in approximately 90 percent of the state as of Oct. 1. In the remaining 10 percent of Wyoming, wolf hunting season opened for the first time since the gray wolf was eradicated from the state in the early 1900s. Fifty-two wolves are expected to be killed in the “trophy zone” hunting season and dozens more in the free-fire “predator zone” over the coming weeks.

All of this wolf-killing threatens to turn back the tide of wolf recovery in the Northern Rockies and leave Yellowstone area wolves isolated from other wolf populations in the region. And it is all happening because the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service turned wolf management in Wyoming over to state officials, despite the fact that Wyoming’s wolf management policies open the door to unlimited wolf killing throughout most of the state and provide inadequate protection for wolves even where killing is regulated.

Earthjustice supporters have sent nearly 60,000 letters to the White House, requesting restoration of federal protection for wolves in Wyoming until the state comes up with a responsible management plan. We receive calls daily with questions and concerns about what private citizens can do to stop open season on this majestic animal that performs a valuable ecological role and stands as a living symbol of wilderness.

More than 100 Earthjustice supporters were able to ask questions of Tim Preso, managing attorney of the Earthjustice Northern Rockies office, who has been working to defend the wolf population in his region for more than a decade. He fielded excellent questions for about an hour this week to provide background, history and perspective to the current wolf hunt and Earthjustice’s decades-long fight to protect the endangered gray wolf.

This recording demonstrates the dedication and concern of supporters across the nation. On your behalf, we will do our utmost to ensure that the Northern Rockies remains a region where the wolf still howls:

We call ourselves human, not humane because we could not possibly claim this title. It embarrasses me to be of the same race as those uncaring humans whom simply destroy nature at every turn for their own personal wealth. 50 Sheep killed in a year by wolf's? I don't really see this being a problem, I have been caught in a sheep crossing before and we sat there for 2 hours watching sheep go by, thousands of sheep, and so you loose 50? And that in the entire state in one year? Does this even make sense? Seems to me just another distraction. Why do we even put up with this nonsense? It's about time for normal people to stand up and take back this world from the self centered fear mongering sociopaths who think money is everything and lack future vision. We do not own this world, we are only guests.

I agree more action is needed. Killing wolves indiscriminately results in the loss of older more experienced wolves that can teach others to avoid areas near humans and livestock. Ranchers need to do more to protect their herds. Especially those grazing on low cost Federal pasture!!!! One Minnesota sheep herder has avoided losing even one animal since 1999 by using specially bred guard dogs and electric netting. This slaughter must stop!!!. Killing will result in inbreeding and weakening of the whole species...A goal of the ranchers.......

Thank you so much, Earth Justice, that you are doing for the protection of wolves! Wolves are one of the most beautiful and social animals that I know of! It is so sad that man has to take their extinction into their own hands! God gave us these beautiful animals, along with all of the animal creation, to take care of, not to kill! God allows mother nature to take of excess population, He does not need our help in this matter! Unless you have had a wolf hybred for a pet, you cannot understand how, what social animal they are! They only hunt for self preservation. This is nature, and you can't fool mother nature! If you think they are dangerous, may it's because we as humans have INVADED their habitat! When we enter THEIR HOME, we have to be prepared for THEIR reaction! We as human beings just keep creeping closer and closer to their homes! STAY OUT!

This is just one more example of this DOI's attitude towards wildlife. They are working very hard at eradicating the wild horses (which ARE wildlife - not feral) and killing wolves who could possibly help to "manage" the horses is yet another example of this foolishness.
Mountain lions have already been pretty much wiped out - because the hunters want to be able to do their own killing of prey animals.
The ranchers who claim these animals are attacking their cattle or sheep have other ways of protecting them rather than killing off everything in nature!

Just tell us one good reason why killing animals is so important? Bloodthirst? Seeing a life succumb to death gives you a thrill? Are you related genetically to these mass murderers that in their spare time tortured and killed their neighbors pets? Will you turn into one of them ......?
Manson or Daumer? What are you doing with their bodies? Stuff it and hang it on your walls to relieve the event of killing again and again... And showing of your bravery to the likeminded
Imbeciles? How does it feel to kill next a human beeing... Same thrill? AI we want to know is why! ??.

Please do not destroy innocent and beatiful widlife. We are not the only one on the earth. Why don't we co-exist with beatiful wildlife. This killing is so wrong and whoever gave this authority to kill innocent lives should re-think how imporant to keep widlife safe not only benetfits for himself or herself. We are the only one who can after inventing guns.

contact Wyoming governement page and we need to sue the state for wanton destruction of life! They should not have the right just because of their location etc to do this, also by thinning out the genetic diversitysoon wolves will beocmoe more inter-bred and weakened physically and mentall just like all the poli-tic-ians and ruling elite inbred idiots that love killing and destruction of all life!
People you own the public lands demand! and once you say class action lawsuit
then you will get results! I think we recently passed a law that enabled animals to have a voice!

Thank you so much, Kari, and thank you "EarthJustice" for sharing this interview with Tim Preso. Considering myself to be an animal advocate, I have been very troubled by the terrible amnesia affecting many when we allow the apparent eradication of a species as exemplified by the permission to kill wolves. We worked to protect them and save them from extinction and now are ignoring that vision. We can develop a better answer to problems some of the Western States feel without vilifying a beautiful and very important part of the ecological system.

Let the wolves live. Protect wolves from harm and protect them from human barbarians. I say this with all my heart.

This is an abomination against nature
This cruel and unforgivable act twors one of natures creatures

STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF THESE BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS DEVOTED TO THEIR ONE PARTNER AND BABY WOLFS.

When Go created this planet, he decide all spices have a place to live, so the man cant pretended to live in every where, the men are the perfect predator, is time to make a stop, and see around, and start to take real care of all because is enough. In every where there's only ONE GOD, the GOD of love. How belongs every and everything. No exist others creators or other honers. This is it!!!

Please, COMPASSION TO ALL SENTIENT BEINGS!

STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF THESE BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS DEVOTED TO THEIR ONE PARTNER AND BABY WOLFS.
They benefit nature by eating rabbits and weak and diseased animals that would otherwise weaken the herd.
SO THSE CRIMINALS CAN enjoy killing animals and demand the right to kill them. Simple CRIMINALS with the permission of ignorant and criminal people with the power to do so.

This is a Tragedy, it appears the legacy of man is to be, because of greed, power and irresponsibility man destroyed nature and nearly destroyed himself. It is becoming more and more obvious that man is not capable of being the steward of the earth.

I, as, well am disgusted by the wolf hunting. Wisconsin has just begun wolf hunting, against the wishes of Native American tribes, as well as the general public. Deer hunting is a big part of of our tourism, and some residents believe that the wolf population takes more than its share of deer-how ridiculous!

The Good Lord up above created the wolves for a reason. Killing them over the stupidity of brainless humans certainly was not a reason. You people have become like puppets on a string being controlled, manipulated, brain washed into believing these lies to kill as many wolves as you can.
What have the wolves done on this earth??? Certainly nothing compared to us humans!
What have done as humans on earth? We've destroyed the living areas of wolves, and other animals. We've polluted the water ways, and encrouching on the living areas of these wolves and many other animas. We are destroying the land, water,& air.
Then you say we need to murder wolves, just to stop them from killing animals for food.
Ahhhh we humans kill how many animals on a daily basis for food? Cows, calves, pigs, chickens, turkeys, lambs, deer, bear,fh,just for human consumption!
All animals including wolves do the same thing all in the name of survival. They only take what tey need when the need it. They do not kill everyday unless they are trying to survive on small animals like birds, mice, rabbits, moles, voles. Which isn't a lot fr the pack to live on. They hae to take down bigger animals for their own survival. Many of these are the weak or te sickly animals.
Shame on you stupid brainless people for wanting to kill (murder) these wonderful & beautiful creatures of GOD!!!!!!!!

This is a terrible way to "manage" what should be considered a resource. But it is not the only
slaughter of wildlife currently going on in the United States.

Here is the Sierra foothills the Federal Fish and Wildlife has recently conducted a "hunt" which
has resulted in the death of at least 50 coyotes in this area. When I was a kid this was done
and the dead animals were hung on the fences along the highways through the area. Now they are killed but not displayed. But the coyotes are survivors, they will be back.

humans are considered a resource as well

humans are considered a resource as well

this is why humans make me cry

God created everything. If we kill God's Creation without justification, without His permission,

have we committed a sin?

This is such a shame , a disgrace for the people of that state . The wolves are natural predators of deer , and like the rabbits they are vastly over populated . Now it will be even worse because the delicate balance of nature will be upset so a few " brave " men can have their pitiful little trophies .

It is truly sad that misguided bureaucrats have decided to allow open season on wolves. The worst is that there are "trophy zones" where hunters can just shoot wolves for "sport". If in fact wolves are creating a nuisance, possibly these wolves should be trapped and relocated, but there is so little evidence that wolves are chasing and killing sheep and cattle it is pathetic. The Secretary of the Federal Department of Interior as well as the State of Wyoming's legislature that have allowed this sad occurrence to begin without understanding the consequences to other wild animals is almost criminal. Hopefully Secretary Salazar will submit his resignation as soon as possible, and be shunned forever by those interested in the preservation of wildlife

Wolves like any other species of the animal kingdom are inhabitators not by chance or mistake but for the neccessity of the ecological system of balance

When Humans take over once wild lands that wolves
Freely roamed and lived on, what do these rich greedy
Ranchers expect? Docile apologistic animal behavior?
Please 'EARTHJUSTICE' help out beautiful ancestors who stayed
Wild-- the WOlve

Wolves have an important role in a healthy ecology. They eat the weak and diseased animals that would otherwise weaken the herd. They also eat rabbits, which otherwise will periodically overpopulate and die off from a very dangerous disease called tularemia that can also kill humans who encounter them.

Wilderness *needs* wolves to be healthy. Furthermore, according to a Montana ranch manager I spoke with, pet dogs are a much greater threat to cattle than wolves, because well fed dogs will torment and kill cattle for sport. He had sadly had to shoot dogs he knew, knew their owners, but he caught the dogs killing cattle and had to put them down because once they start, they keep doing it over and over.

I wish the problem of wolf slaughter were just one of ignorance, because that could be remedied. But I believe it is a matter of many people **enjoying killing things** and demanding that they have a right to kill things. I have no problem with people killing (humanely) to eat---but killing for fun is just plain evil!

My GOD WHAT A TOTAL DISGRACE TO HUMANITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS ALLOWED!!!!!!

YOU BETTER LOOK TO GOD , BECAUSE I'M PRETTY SURE 'HE' DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KILL THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wolves were created, as were humans and all species, somehow. On a global scale, how much harm do wolves do? How do humans decide the right to eradicate other species?
And if other species exercised the same omnipotent right to kill others, including humans, would you agree? Nature practices a balance; humans create imbalance.

The balance of nature and all of the creatures, including humans, have a place upon this fragile planet. The sooner we as the dominate species realize that we too must fit into this symbiotic relationship with our fellow species, the healthier our planet we call home will be. It is not our place to play god with the balance of nature, we are not that smart! We are responsible to practice balance, not imbalance ~live and let live. Respect our planet and do no harm.

Killing animals who, not for sport, but only to eat, kill other animals? Next thing you know someone will decide it's o.k. to kill innocent people! Oh, sorry, that's been done already. We never seem to learn, do we? To paraphrase Mark Twain: God created humanity in God's own image and was so disappointed in what we have done with it that then, as an improvement, God created the ape!
