A provision proposed for the draft infrastructure plan under consideration in the Senate would reportedly enable buses and ferries powered by fossil fuels to qualify for funding meant for clean transportation.

In response, Earthjustice Associate Legislative Representative Athena Motavvef issued the following statement:

“Transportation is the biggest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution in the United States, and our 480,000 school buses make up the largest fleet of vehicles in the country. Most still run on dirty diesel, spewing toxic chemicals into the air, aggravating the climate crisis, and poisoning the air around where children learn and play. Funding more fossil fuel buses is a mistake. Children deserve to know that our lawmakers are going to protect their right to clean air, clean water, and a healthy climate — electric buses set us on the path to a zero emissions and 100% clean energy future.”

Earthjustice is advocating for significant investments in climate, clean energy, zero-emissions transportation, and environmental justice alongside any bipartisan infrastructure package.
