Earthjustice Statement on Trump Administration’s Latest Mining Pollution Giveaway
The Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council (FPISC) voted this week to bring some mining projects under its jurisdiction in an attempt to clear the way for more expensive and irreversable pollution, more harm to imperiled species, and more damage to human health. Earthjustice joined a number of organizations on a letter noting concerns with the proposal to move mining under FPISC’s jurisdiction in March of 2018.
The following is a statement from Tom Waldo, senior staff attorney in Earthjustice’s Alaska office:
“This is the latest blatant giveaway to polluter interests from the Trump administration. Worse still, FPISC has failed to go through the public notice and comment process required to make such a change. It just shows that FPISC, like so many federal agencies under this administration, is willing to circumvent whatever rules or requirements it takes to help dirty industries make a buck.”
